GROWING IN AWARENESS OF THE GREATNESS OF GOD

“Now to Him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to His power that is at work within us, to Him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen.” Ephesians 3:20-21 (NIV).

At the end of Paul’s prayer, he praises God who is able to do far more abundantly than all we ask or think.  What is Paul referring to?  Paul is speaking of God’s unlimited, awesome power and His greatness.  Why is it important to have a true sense and awareness of the greatness of God?

A main cause of why our faith is weak, our worship routine, and our praises unsung is that we have lost our sense of the greatness of God.  How do we grow in our awareness of the greatness of God?

  • Read and Meditate on Scripture

“For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through the endurance taught in the Scriptures and the encouragement they provide we might have hope.” Romans 15:4 (NIV).

The main way to cultivate and grow your awareness of the greatness of God is to take in and dwell on the truths of who God is, what He has done and what He promises to be if you ask Him to take root in your heart.  So, it is making it a focus of your life and schedule to read and meditate on God’s Word.

Biblical meditation is the process of taking a verse of the Bible and prayerfully considering it, thinking it over, and then personally applying it to your life.  J. I. Packer said it this way: “It is an activity of holy thought, consciously performed in the presence of God, under the eye of God, by the help of God, as a means of communion with God.”

And all you need is the Bible and to take the time to allow the Word of God to let you see clearly the greatest and awesomeness of God.

  • See God’s Greatness in Action

“Jesus looked at them and said, ‘With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.’” Matthew 19:26 (NIV).

It's one thing to know facts about how God is great, but the stories in the Bible not only tell us that God is great, the stories show us.  As we look at the great stories of the Bible about how God has acted in history, we see God's greatness: The blind see, the lame walk, those that cannot have children give birth, God's purposes are accomplished, His promises are fulfilled, His people are rescued, Jesus is resurrected.

  • Reflect on the Gospel

“But because of His great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions—it is by grace you have been saved.” Ephesians 2:4-5 (NIV).

We can make the greatness of God personal by taking the time to reflect on what God has done to bring you into a relationship with Him.

So, reflect on your sin. Reflect on His grace. Reflect on the fact that you have your identity in Christ. Reflect on God's great love and compassion. Think about God's great holiness and justice. Think about the cross. Reflect not just on your need of the Gospel, but how you continually need the Gospel. There's no better or greater place to see the greatness of God than in the Good News of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

  • Go Outside With a Purpose

“‘Pay attention to this, Job. Stop and consider the wonderful miracles of God! Do you know how God controls the storm and causes the lightning to flash from his clouds? Do you understand how he moves the clouds with wonderful perfection and skill?’” Job 37:14-16 (NLT).

Lots of times we just spend our lives inside. Getting outside to enjoy God's creation can have a huge impact in cultivating a sense of the greatness of God in your heart, mind and soul. Let the mountains, a beach, a walk with your eyes and ears help you focus into the greatness of God who made all that you see.
